Obsidian, a volcanic glass, has a smooth, glossy appearance. Obsidian is formed as lava from volcanic eruptions cools within the earth. The speed at which it cools prevents crystallization and the rock forms as solid volcanic glass. Pure obsidian is usually dark in appearance, although the color varies depending on the presence of impurities. Iron gives Mahogany Obsidian its reddish- brown color. The “snowflakes” in Snowflake Obsidian forms when lava cools more slowly, allowing crystals to form. The “snowflakes” are spherulites, composed of needle-like cristobalite, a type of Quartz. Measures 33x23mm.
